Distinguishing Canadian Professional Bodies

This book is the fourth in the series on the professionalization of professional associations and other related professional organizations such as regulatory bodies and learned societies. In the series we examine the proposition that professional bodies are becoming more strategic, more reflective, more structured, in short, more professional. Here we present the first study of professional bodies in Canada, along with a comparison with those in the UK and Ireland, distinguishing provincial from federal organizations.

The findings from a survey of 75 professional bodies in Canada are compared with a survey of 110 associations in the UK, and 21 in Ireland.

There are some remarkable similarities to be found between professional bodies in these countries over a wide range of issues including continuing professional development, ethics, governance, membership, operations, income and external relations.
