Exploring Approaches to Recruitment into Professional Employment and Careers
Following the publication of its report on how professional bodies can embed diversity in their organisations, PARN was appointed by Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills (DIUS) to undertake research to develop case studies of interesting and innovative practices that encourage diversity in people entering professional employment and careers. This has lead to the development of a toolkit on recruitment practices that encourage diversity in the professions, the Professional Recruitment Guide, which is now on the DIUS website and available for public use.
To visit the Professional Recruitment Guide, please click here.
The research aimed to:
- consider practices across a range of private and public sector employers and recruitment agencies responsible for recruitment at a professional level
- consider a range of professions, including those stated in the Langlands’ Report: Accountancy, Architecture, Chemistry, Dentistry, Engineering, Law, Medicine, Nursing and Midwifery, Social Care, Teaching, and Veterinary Science
- focus on identifying good practice in recruitment, i.e. practices that enhance diversity amongst entrants to the professions, and
- inform the development of a toolkit on recruitment practices into the professions.
The objectives of the research were to:
- specify the stages of the recruitment process
- describe a range of practices used at each stage of the recruitment process
- develop case studies of good and interesting practice in relation to each stage of the recruitment process that promote diversity
- highlight any practices that may disadvantage candidates who are not ‘typical’ for the profession
- develop some general principles for fair and objective interviewing that may be applicable across professions
- identify how professional bodies can influence recruitment into the professions by employers, and
- produce an electronic toolkit on recruitment practices into the professions.
