Importance of professions

Professional occupations have increased substantially in the last two decades. Growth has taken place not only in the traditional professions, but also in new professions that have emerged as changes in the nature of commerce, the values of society and advances in technology demand new skills and new specialisms.

New professional bodies are being created to cater for the needs of these new specialists. Currently there are approximately 400 professional associations in the UK with over 1000 members. Together they represent 6 million professionals.

Need for research and networking

PARN was set up in 1999 by Andy Friedman from the Management Research Centre at the University of Bristol, UK.

It arose from numerous requests for information following two conferences for professional associations in the UK organised by the University of Bristol. This indicated that, despite their importance to the UK economy, there was very little research being carried out on this sector and relatively little co-ordination between professional associations in different sectors on areas of common concern.

As a result, the coming launch of PARN was announced at the Third Annual Conference for Strategic Directions on UK Professional Associations on 23 June 1998.
