BBPA Urgent Call to Government Amid Soaring Energy Prices

Trade bodies in the hospitality sector including the British Beer and Pub Association (BBPA) are renewing their call to the government for help amid the worsening of the cost of living crisis.

Energy prices are set to soar again in the autumn as Ofgem announced another energy price cap increase last week.

In the announcement Ofgem confirmed that the energy price cap with increase to £3549 for the average dual fuel household, worst still more increases are forecast with updates now commencing every three months, rather than twice a year. It's pertinent to add that the energy price cap doesn't apply to businesses.

Brewery and Pub owners from six companies, JW Lees, Carlsberg Marston's, Admiral Taverns, Drake & Morgan, Greene King and St Austell Brewery, who sit on the board of the BBPA have written an open letter to the government stating "urgently need the Government and the leadership contenders to outline a targeted support package for the sector".

A recent report from one licensee of a small community pub was of a £33,000 increase on their previous year’s energy costs.

Pubs across the UK may be forces to close due to the soaring prices, some establishments will need to take an additional £1800 a week just to cover the additional costs.

Publicans have united to raise the alarm of the ‘real and serious irreversible’ damage the energy crisis will cause if the government do not implement an 'urgent support package'
